K.J. Smith first followed in his father's footsteps in coming to Carolina, and now, he's following in those footsteps again as a scholarship basketball player.

Son of Carolina legend Kenny Smith, K.J. joined the program as a walk-on in 2017 after playing his freshman season at Pacific. There, he averaged 13 minutes in 24 games before deciding to head east. 

After sitting one season as a transfer, Smith played 40 minutes over 22 games for the Tar Heels last, scoring a season-best five points in a victory over UCLA. 

On Monday, teammate Armando Bacot posted the news to Instagram, and on Tuesday, Carolina shared video of the moment Smith received the scholarship from Williams before calling his father.
